“You said you’d take care of security,” Peter Obi tells Vice President Shettima

Peter Obi, the Labour Party, LP’s presidential candidate for 2023, has urged President Bola Tinubu to keep his campaign pledge and end Nigeria’s widespread insecurity.

On Tuesday, Obi voiced his great concern over what he characterized as a spike of violence sweeping over the Federal Capital Territory. He went on to warn that, given Nigeria’s current predicament, no foreign investor or partner would want to engage in the country.

It is now time for the leaders to take all kinds of serious action to address the situation, he said, adding that the recent killings of two abducted girls in Abuja made it much more dismal.

On Tuesday, the ex-governor of Anambra State took to his X handle to express his disappointment with the previous administration of President Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari had campaigned and gained office on a platform promising to address security, the economy, and corruption, but instead, insecurity only became worse.

The recent upsurge in violence in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, adds to the countrywide worry over the persistence of terror attacks, banditry, kidnappings, and violence.

The recent abduction and murder of two girls in Abuja has only served to heighten the gravity of the situation. As leaders, it is our responsibility to address this crisis head-on and take decisive action. It is regrettable that in 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari ran on a platform of “security, economy, and corruption” (SEC) and was elected.

All three areas have deteriorated since he took office eight years ago. Upon taking office, the current administration pledged to address the same three issues head-on: security, the economy, and corruption. The problem, though, is worse now than it has ever been.

Sen. Kashim Shettima, who was running for vice president at the time and spoke at the 2022 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association in Lagos, Nigeria, made it clear that he would oversee security as vice president if the APC were to be elected, with the president, who is an expert in economics, taking charge of the economy.

Therefore, Nigerians are pleading with them to keep their campaign pledges. It is important that they give it their all regardless of the outcome.

Until we address the terrible domestic situation, it is imperative that government officials refrain from traveling abroad in any capacity. Now that we’re in this mess, no international investor or partner wants to put money into Nigeria.

“If we want to make any real headway, we need to stop the violence and insecurity from spreading across our country.”
