Following President Bola Tinubu’s withdrawal of her name from the list of ministerial nominations, Dr. Maryam Shetty blamed the action on life’s unpredictability, adding she carried no ill will towards anyone.
She saw being selected as a validation of her ability and a proof of the nation’s willingness to promote young women from the most conservative sections of the country to positions of power.
Shetty, who was born in Kano State and whose nomination was withdrawn in favor of Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, stated this in a statement issued Wednesday.
As of press time, no explanation had been provided for the decision to change her name with Mahmoud’s, who is also from Kano.
Shetty, on the other hand, said the development was not a setback.
“I have found myself at the center of a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s political landscape,” she says. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu nominated me as a ministerial nominee, which was a tremendous honor for me.
Coming from traditional, conservative northern Nigeria, this was a big step toward more inclusive national representation.
“I couldn’t express how happy and proud I was to be nominated. It was a validation of my abilities, a nod to my vision, and an indication that our wonderful nation was ready to accept a future in which young women like me, even from the most conservative sections of Nigeria, could assume positions of influence and power.
“However, life, with its characteristic unpredictability, caused me to withdraw my nomination.” This may appear to others to be a setback, but my faith as a devoted Muslim guided my understanding.
I recognized it as Allah’s divine will, who I believe grants authority as and when He pleases. His ideas are always better than ours.”
