U.S. Warns Niger Coup Plotters “We May Be Pushed to Invade”

The United States has issued a warning to the coup plotters in Niger Republic, saying that if the country’s military rulers do not restore constitutional order, the United States may be forced to become militarily engaged.

This was announced by teleconference on Tuesday by acting U.S. Deputy Secretary Victoria Nuland during a special briefing on Niger.

“There is still a lot of motion here on many sides with regard to where the governance situation will go,” Victoria stated.

There are a lot of upcoming regional meetings and discussions with allies and partners that we need to attend to, so we will be keeping a careful eye on that as well.

“So we’ll be keeping an eye on the situation,” he said, “but we understand our legal responsibilities and I explained those very clearly to the guys (Niger junta) who were responsible for this, and that it is not our desire to go there, but they may push us to that point, and we asked them to be prudent in that regard and to hear our offer to try to work with them to solve this diplomatically and return to constitutional order.”
She stated that President Joe Bden has maintained regular communication with ECOWAS Chairman President Tinubu and other European friends.

He has been in constant communication with Nigerian President Tinubu, who is also the current president of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), African Union (AU) Chairperson Faki, and other European allies with whom we collaborate in Niger, especially in the area of counterterrorism.

That the present assault to the democratic order that began on July 26 was so unexpected and continues to be so baffling is evidence of how deeply ingrained our common ideals, especially a sense of democracy, are.
