The Nigerian Army and Department of State Services (DSS) operatives have discovered some hideouts of members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Delta State.
The coordinated operation of the security agencies was carried out today, Saturday, July 22, 2023, according to reports.
According to the Nigerian Army, numerous IPOB members fled their various camps in Asaba, Delta State’s capital, this morning after security operatives opened fire on them.
The Nigerian Army’s spokesman, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed the encounter while speaking to press in Abuja today, saying that several firearms were retrieved from their pockets.
Nwachukwu described the seized ammo as 5 AK 47 rifles, three pump action semi-automatic rifles, one G3 rifle, one single barrel gun, live cartridges, an electric saw, machetes, an axe, and an IPOB flag.
“In a sustained effort to rid Nigeria of criminality, troops of 63 Bde Garrison, under the auspices of 6 Division, Nigerian Army, and the Department of State Services, have destroyed an enclave of the proscribed IPOB/ESN at Asaba, Delta State, today Saturday 22 July 2023, in an ongoing clearance operation,” he said.
“In the early hours of the day, the troops raided the fortified enclave located in the middle of a forested high ground.”
“In the exchange of fire that followed the encounter, the gallant troops overpowered the IPOB fighters, forcing them to abandon their hideout in disarray.” The army have demolished the enclave and are scouring the forest for fleeing fighters.”
He mentioned that the Chief of Army Staff, Maj.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, has ordered that individuals jeopardizing the country’s peace not be dealt with kid gloves.
According to the army spokesman, Lagbaja praised the troops and other security agencies for their efforts in the ongoing operations, and he urged them to keep the momentum going in order to restore calm to the region.
