The government of Adamawa has confirmed 8 fatalities and 7 missing after a canoeing tragedy

The Adamawa State government revealed on Saturday that eight individuals had died in a canoeing accident in the Yola South Local Government Area.

Early on Friday, the government confirmed that one person had died after a boat carrying 23 people overturned in Njuwa Lake at Rugange, a hamlet in the Yola South LGA.

With eight lives saved and eight bodies recovered, there were still seven persons missing.

While accompanying the state’s Deputy Governor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, on a visit of condolence to the relatives of the afflicted individuals, Mohamed Suleiman, Executive Secretary of the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency, ADSEMA, provided an update.

The ADSEMA director gave his word that they were making every attempt to locate the passengers who had not yet been located.

The deputy governor said at the accident site that life jackets would be made available to canoeists in order to reduce casualties in the event of future mishaps.

She cautioned those living near rivers, other canoeists, and canoeists themselves to check the forecast for things like rain and storms before setting out.

A rainstorm is said to have slammed the canoe on Friday, throwing it off balance and causing the catastrophe, as reported by sarewahausa.
