The Armed Forces of Gabon Have Sworn to Quickly Return Democracy

General Brice Oligui Nguema, the head of Gabon’s armed forces, has vowed to restore democracy.
Although elections have not been scheduled at this time, it was stated that the suspension of democracy will be short-lived.
Nguema assured the population in a televised address on Friday that the military would move “quickly but surely” to avoid elections that repeat the same mistakes by keeping the same people in power, and that the suspension of the country’s state institutions was only temporary.
To avoid making the same mistakes twice, “moving as quickly as possible” does not entail holding elections on short notice.
