As part of an effort to eliminate illegal firearms from circulation, the Borno State Police Command has issued a mandate requiring anyone in possession of a firearm to turn it in to the police station nearest them immediately.
The statement was released to the media and included the order from the Command’s Public Relations Office, ASP Sani Kamilu Shatambaya.
The statement claims that the step follows orders from Acting Inspector General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun to reduce the spread of weapons of mass destruction.
In its statement, the Command informed citizens, especially those in possession of the weapons, that turning them up voluntarily would not result in legal repercussions.
He explained that the goal was to make the state safer for everyone by lowering the overall gun supply. “This is aimed at reducing the number of guns in circulation across the State,” he stated.
The Command stated that offenders who refused to surrender their weapons would be subject to the full force of the law if they were ever apprehended.
It cautioned that anyone caught with a gun, whether real or fake (i.e., locally made firearms, dummy guns, etc.), would be arrested and prosecuted for unauthorized possession of a firearm.
