In light of the alleged destruction of school property during graduation celebrations, the administration of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, has imposed a repair charge of N20,000 on each of the 2012/2022 graduates.
The Senate voted at its 495th meeting on Thursday, August 31, 2023, to impose a N20,000.00 tax on each graduating student from the Class of 2021/2022 for vandalizing University property.
The school government rusticated the identified ring leaders/key actors in the diabolical crime for one academic session, according to a statement issued by the Registrar/Secretary to the Senate, Mr Chiadozie Uba.
In a statement, senators said, “The Senate considered the submission from the Committee of Deans on the senseless celebration involving wanton destruction of University properties by graduating students and the above-reached decisions of the Senate are for necessary action, please.”
According to information acquired by SAREWA HAUSA this incident has heightened tensions on campus, with some students believing administration acted too hastily in meting out punishment.
An anonymous 2012/2022 alumnus appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Hope Uzodinma for assistance.
No one in this group, he asserted, “did anything like that.” I recall that the school sent us a memo prohibiting exam-time celebrations of any kind, and that we all complied.
The school administration is attempting to extort funds from us in a roundabout way, as this memo shows.
