A’sleepy driver’ on the Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway apparently lost control on Saturday, killing three people who were purportedly Christian priests.
The accident happened at Day Waterman College, heading toward Abeokuta, according to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement (TRACE) Corps, at around 9:44 a.m.
The road accident included a white Sino truck with number plate WDL 466 XA and a black Kia Rio automobile with registration number AKD 827 DV, according to TRACE Corps spokesman Babatunde Akinbiyi.
Akinbiyi blamed “sleeping behind the wheel, coupled with speeding and loss of control on the part of the Rio car driver” for the car accident.
He claims that the car crossed over to the opposite lane of the road, toppled the street light at the median, and struck the Sino cement truck that was traveling from Abeokuta.
Seven guys were reportedly engaged in the tragedy; three of them killed, two had injuries, and three were saved unharmed. According to reports, the casualties were brought to the State Hospital in Ijaiye, Abeokuta.
“The Rio car, with a driver, a passenger, and three men of God in white clothing/apparel with robes were driving in was coming from Oke-Iragbiji in Osun State, for prayers and deliverance service,” an eyewitness who spoke to Daily Post claimed.
“Suddenly, the driver lost control of the vehicle owing to high speed and was apparently nodding off at the wheel. He crossed the median, struck and uprooted the street lamp on the median, and then slammed into the Sino cement truck that was leaving Abeokuta.
The driver and the passenger in front were hurt as a result of the crash, but the three men of God perished instantly.
Akinbiyi expressed sympathy to the families of the victims while advising drivers to avoid speeding and get enough rest, ideally six to seven hours before a trip.
