Prof. Isaac Albert, a public affairs pundit, urged the country’s biggest opposition parties on Saturday to abandon their efforts to overturn the results of the presidential election held on February 25.
In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan, Albert argued that this would be an improvement and would help save the Supreme Court from wasting money in the future.
On Wednesday, the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) upheld the election results, declaring All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate President Bola Tinubu as the victor.
He came in second, ahead of the People’s Democratic Party’s Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and third, ahead of the Labour Party’s Mr. Peter Obi.
Peace and Conflict Studies professor at the University of Ibadan, Albert, said the judges’ analyses showed the opposition parties to be thoroughly defeated.
Their arguments just did not hold water.
“An explicit constitutional explanation also put to rest the contention that a particular percentage of votes cast in the FCT may make or break the win of a competitor.
If the opposition chooses to appeal the verdict, the Supreme Court will find that the tribunal has already done more than 80% of the work.
“Therefore, I think that it will be a waste of time and resources for those challenging Tinubu’s victory because they have no evidence,” the academic said.
The professor added that the verdict was memorable because it resolved every issue by considering whether or not it was in conflict with the Constitution.
