Reasons Why Nigerian Medical Professionals “Japa” To Other African Nations – NARD

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) claims that poor working conditions and inadequate healthcare facilities in Nigeria are to blame for the exodus of its members to other African countries.

Concerns were voiced by the group in advance of a planned protest action beginning on Wednesday at locations across the country including the Federal Ministry of Health, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, and all federal and state tertiary health institutions.

this is the latest in a series of actions taken by resident doctors to pressure the federal government into fulfilling a number of their demands, such as paying the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) immediately, publishing the circular on one-for-one replacement without further delay, and settling any outstanding skipping arrears.

NARD President Emeka Orji expressed concern about the deteriorating working conditions in the Nigerian health sector during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.

Orji claims that the japa sickness is responsible for the annual deaths of 1,000 to 2,000 of his or her medical colleagues in Nigeria, causing the country’s resident doctor population to drop from 16,000 to 12,000 or 15,000.

When asked which nations some of these doctors choose to work in, Orji answered, “And some of them are even going to African countries.” If doctors are leaving Nigeria for other African countries, you can imagine how awful the health care system has gotten there.
