To steal goods from a private hotel on Odukpani Road in Calabar, Cross River State, suspects have admitted to the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), zone six, Jonathan Towuru.
After receiving a petition against them, they confessed.
Igwe Abeng Igwe, 25, Denis Godwin, 23, and Ogar Ating, 27, were named in a case filed by hotel owner Bassey Okon Etim accusing them of stealing from his establishment.
The defendants were detained following an investigation by the Zonal Squad under the direction of ACP Emeka Onyekaba after the petitioner identified them.
“The suspects on interrogation confessed to stealing from the petitioner’s Bebobsco hotel, No. 62 Old Odukpani road, Calabar on June 5, 2023, having disguised as real guests,” according to a statement signed by zone six Police PRO Nelson Okpabi.
In their homes, the team carried out a search warrant execution and seized a red Topstar motorcycle with a Labour Party logo that was not registered, chassis number LKIPCK16M1008057, engine number 162FMJ51011509,
one Senwei petrol generator, two televisions (a Century 32-inch and a Samsung 24-inch), an OX standing fan, a television, a mattress, a GOTV decoder, duvets, pillows, and bedsheets.
The reported theft of goods from hotel guests on February 14, 2023 was denied by the suspects.
The suspects also directed the investigators to 23-year-old Ekpe David Efioette, who got the generator and then sold it to Becky Osinachi Chukwu. A search was conducted there, and the generator was found.
The statement added that the suspects would shortly be arraigned in court and that the police were still conducting a covert investigation into the case.
The AIG urged hotel operators to be cautious about the clients they accept and to alert them to any suspicious clients.
He also urged the populace to be concerned about their communities’ security and to provide timely information to the security agencies.
