The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has condemned FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC, the makers of Peak Milk, for an offensive Easter advertisement that has outraged Nigerian Christians.
The company used the crucifixion of Jesus Christ as a metaphor to promote their product on Good Friday in the controversial advertisement, which CAN described as “totally unacceptable” to the Christian population.
Barrister Joseph Daramola, General Secretary of CAN, warned the company to retract the advertisement and apologize to Christians or face legal action and a boycott of their products by Christians.
“We believe this advertisement is insensitive, offensive, and completely unacceptable.” Good Friday is a solemn day for Christians worldwide, commemorating the death of Jesus.
Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour, who was crucified on the cross for our sins. “This is not a day for sleazy commercialism,” he said.
Daramola went on to say that FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC’s actions were an affront to millions of Christians in Nigeria and around the world.
“We are deeply disappointed that a company of such repute would stoop so low to profit from its customers’ religious sentiments,” he said.
CAN also stated that it was considering imposing sanctions on FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC, including a boycott of their products by its members and other concerned Nigerians.
“We demand that the company unconditionally apologize to the Christian community.”
