PDP is further weakened as a defection looms over Anyim’s visit to Ganduje

Some important members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, appear to be considering leaving the opposition party.

Many party members are thought to be willing to accept nominations from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who has pledged a government of national unity.

Since losing the 2023 presidential election to President Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC, the PDP has been attempting to distance itself from implosion.

Nyesom Wike, the immediate former governor of Rivers State, has already left the party after accepting a cabinet position from the Tinubu administration. The Senate has conducted a background check on Wike.

Another party chieftain, Senate Anyim Pius Anyim, is said to have finalized arrangements to join the APC alongside former governor of his state, Ebonyi, Senator David Umahu.

Anyim was said to have met with APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje in his Abuja residence.

Anyim, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, met with Ganduje, but the meeting’s outcome is unknown.

According to insiders, Anyim is on his way to the ruling party.

During the 2014 general election, the Senator, a key member of the PDP, supported the APC candidate, now Governor Francis Nwifuru, over his party’s guber candidate in Ebonyi, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii.

It’s unknown whether he backed PDP presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar during the election.

Anyim had already met with President Bola Tinubu in Aso Rock in early July, which many saw as a conspiracy to defect to the ruling APC.

After meeting with Tinubu, the former Senate President informed reporters that

“It was a great honour to pay courtesy to the President and congratulate him, first and foremost, on his successful inauguration as the 16th President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and also to encourage and congratulate him on the bold decisions he has taken thus far.”
Meanwhile, PDP leaders met again over the weekend, but have remained mute on any disciplinary action against members of the party who support the APC.

Following the meeting, Atiku tweeted:

“Earlier today, I met with other leaders and stakeholders of our esteemed party, @OfficialPDPNig, including my Vice Presidential candidate, Dr. @IAOkowa, Governors, and members of the PDP National Working Committee.”

“This meeting provided an opportunity for us to carefully examine our nation’s current state and to thoughtfully articulate a path forward from the critical crossroads at which we currently find ourselves.” -AA.”
