An Ondo State High Court in Akure, the state capital, sentenced a man, Ajayi Famakinwa, to 18 years in prison for impregnating a 15-year-old girl. Famakinwa, 60, a pastor, was arrested by police in 2021 at Ayede Ogbese in the state’s Akure North Local Government Area.
His tenant’s daughter was said to be the victim.
Under the guise of delivering the victim from a demonic spirit tormenting her, the convict had carnal knowledge of her.
According to the prosecution, he committed the crime on Ayetoro Street in Ayede Ogbese on April 13, 2021.
The offense is said to be in violation of Section 31(1) of the Child Rights Law.
Ondo State Government, 2012.
The defendant, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
After hearing arguments from the prosecution and defense attorneys, the judge, Justice Yemi Fasanmi, found Famakinwa guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in prison.
The convict was chastised by the judge for impregnating the victim and making her a single mother.
He stated that “the defendant’s conduct, his admission of the crime to the Divisional Police Officer at Ayede Ogbese on October 17, 2021, in his voluntary confessional statement to be responsible for the pregnancy, and other prosecution evidence amounted to sufficient corroboration that the defendant committed the offence.”
The court determined that the defendant’s oral testimony in the witness box and denial of responsibility for the pregnancy were an afterthought.
