Rt Hon Jones Onyereri, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for deputy governor of Imo State, has voiced his displeasure with the tribunal’s decision on the federal constituency election in Ideato North/South in the state, which was originally won by Hon Ikenga Ugochinyere on February 25, 2023.
According to a statement released by Onyereri on Tuesday and shared with our Abuja correspondent, pre-election matters are not intra-party affairs but inter-party, as only a political party determines who its candidates are or are as the case may be, and as such, should not be entertained by court of competent jurisdiction.
The Hon. Ugochinyere won the election venue dispute that arose before the 2023 general election, as the Supreme Court had previously ruled on the topic.
I don’t see why the Tribunal would find differently on the same issue as the Supreme Court. He emphasized the need to correct the historical record by reviewing the verdict rendered by Justice Akpovi.
However, the candidate for deputy governor called on his many backers, friends, and PDP leaders in the Ideato North/South Federal Constituency to maintain peace and order.
As he put it, “Ugochinyere’s victory at the poll was divine as it was victory for Imo people at large,” meaning that the people of Ideato Nation and the Imo people can expect to see justice done in the Court of Appeal.
We’ll be appealing this unfair ruling and going home victorious. Hon Ikenga, our brother, your son, and the champion of the voiceless, will ultimately succeed.
When it comes to the fight to permanently establish good governance in our society, we stand firmly with Ikenga Imo.
