The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima, has asked that no one advertise their birthday wishes to him for money.
It was done “in the spirit of our nation’s commitment to responsible resource management and responsive governance,” Shettima, who turns 57 tomorrow, added.
The Vice President has urged that his birthday wishes not be “placed on newspaper pages or utilize paid channels to convey your greetings,” according to a statement released yesterday in Abuja by the Director of Information in his office, Mr. Olusola Abiola.
The statement began, “Dear friends and well-wishers, greetings to you all,” and was attributed to Shettima.
On the eve of my birthday, September 2, I wanted to express my deep appreciation to everyone who has ever thought of me or spoken kindly of me. Your kindness has warmed my soul and brought me much happiness.
“At the same time, I’d like to use this opportunity to respectfully suggest that you think about marking this milestone in a different way. Please don’t post birthday wishes on newspaper pages or use paid ways to send your greetings, as our country is committed to responsible resource management and responsive governance.
I hope you’ll join me in devoting our energies to a more worthy cause. Instead of spending money on these types of messages, I hope you will consider making a donation to a charity of your choice or to a group that is working to make the world a better place for all of us to live in.
You have been there for me through thick and thin, and I appreciate that.
“Best wishes”
