Officials from the EFCC have been arrested for the murder of a colleague over items recovered from the suspect.

Two Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officers have been arrested for the murder of a colleague over valuable items and property seized from a suspect in detention.

According to a statement issued by the Commission on Tuesday, the arrested personnel were assigned to the Commission’s Sokoto Zonal Command.

Assistant Superintendent Apata Oluwaseun Odunayo and Inspector Ogbuji Titu Tochukwu are accused of conspiring to inflict serious injuries on their colleague, Inspector Abel Isah Dickson, who died in the hospital on May 7.

On Tuesday, the EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, confirmed the news to journalists.

He revealed that the duo has been charged with culpable homicide on two counts.

The deceased officer was On Saturday, May 13, 2023, he will be laid to rest in Jos, Plateau State.

Bawa stated:

“The officer died on May 7, 2023, at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital in Sokoto, where he was receiving treatment for injuries sustained two days earlier in a scuffle with two other EFCC personnel: Assistant Superintendent of EFCC, Apata Oluwaseun Odunayo, and Inspector of EFCC, Ogbuji Titu Tochukwu.”

“They had disagreed over procedures for the custody of items belonging to a suspect in detention, which resulted in a fight, which the Commission condemns.”

“The Commission suspended the two officers with whom he had a disagreement and turned them over to the Nigeria Police for further investigation and possible prosecution.”

A two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide was filed against them at the Gwiwa Chief Magistrate Court in Sokoto.

Both offenses, he explained, are punishable under Sections 60 and 191 of the Sokoto State Penal Code Low, 2019.

Bawa also stated that, without prejudice to the police investigation, they will face additional disciplinary measures in accordance with the Commission’s staff regulations.
