In order to force Multi-Choice Communications to restrict DSTV and GOTV to read-only viewing, activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has given the company 30 days.
If Multi-Choice and other TV networks didn’t switch to’read only during viewing,’ Idam warned legal action.
He claimed it was unfair that customers of Multi-Choice and similar services would be cut off when their subscriptions expired, regardless of whether they continued to use the service or not.
The Abuja-based activist lawyer questioned the failure of Multi-Choice and other satellite stations to carry over unused subscriptions in a pre-action notification seen by sarewa hausa.
Idam claims in his “Pre-action Notice” that he finds it abusive and exploitative that DSTV and GOTV customers are disconnected at the conclusion of each subscription month, regardless of whether or not they actually used the service during that time.
The fact that they have designated agents call clients and threaten disconnection if they don’t pay to renew their membership is totally wrong.
“It’s even more exploitative that DSTV, GOTV, and all the digital satellite providers in Nigeria don’t explain their pricing structures or carry over unused portions of subscriptions. Therefore, users are being subjected to unreasonable fees.
In light of the foregoing, I have given DSTV, GOTV, and all other digital satellite providers thirty (30) days to implement a policy restricting viewing of television programs to text only. If this doesn’t happen, I’m going to sue Multi-Choice TV and every other Nigerian TV station.
