The Kogi Government has stated that gunmen attacked Governor Yahaya Bello’s vehicle on the Abuja-Lokoja route on Saturday.
The incident is said to have taken place at a Naval Base, a few kilometers from Lokoja, the state capital.
Mr Kingsley Fanwo, the Kogi Commissioner for Information, made the announcement in Lokoja.
Fanwo said that the gunmen were political thugs from the state’s opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP).
The incident, which occurred about 12.30 p.m., harmed numerous people, including security aides, who were transported to the hospital for treatment, according to the commissioner.
“When the gunmen, suspected to be SDP political thugs, saw Bello’s convoy approaching, they blocked the road and began shooting at it.”
“A Tundra emblazoned with the party’s logo and flags also obstructed the governor’s vehicle, and the occupants were armed with rifles and short guns.”
“But, thank God, our governor escaped the scene unscathed, and there is no need for concern.”
“Some security aides and other aides to the governor sustained minor injuries and were rushed to medical facilities for treatment.”
“We urge the people of Kogi to remain calm as security agents are in full control of the situation to ensure the arrest of the hoodlums behind the attack,” he said.
Fanwo stated that the state administration would not tolerate any breakdown in law and order and would do everything possible to bring the perpetrators to justice.
According to him, the governor has cautioned that no APC member should participate in any retaliatory action because insecurity from any source will result in harsh punishments.
Mr Kunle Afolayo, Media Aide of the SDP Governorship Candidate, Mr Yakubu Ajaka, responded by claiming, “It was the other way around because it was his political thugs that attacked us.”
“Is it possible for an opposition political party to launch such an attack on a governor?”
“We were on our way from Koton Karfe to the Palace of Maigari in Lokoja this afternoon when the governor’s convoy, which was heading to Lokoja from Abuja, met us on the way and launched an attack on us.”
“God is aware of the truth. “It’s unfortunate that the APC administration in Kogi is using government power against us and lying about a crime they committed against us,” the media aide stated.
