As a result of the conflict between Governor Godwin Obaseki and Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu in Edo State, the latter’s office has been moved from the governor’s mansion to a separate structure.
The new office is reportedly located at 7 Dennis Osadebey Avenue, not far from the presidential palace.
On December 16, 2014, former Governor of the state Sen. Adams Oshiomhole reportedly ordered the state Public Procurement position to be reorganized under the new position of the deputy governor.
A sign reading “Office of The Deputy Governor” was prominently displayed at the building’s front door when the reporter from the publication stopped by.
The building, according to one of the employees, is scheduled to be delivered on Monday.
He claimed ignorance, saying he had not noticed the entrance sign and having no idea what the facility was to be used for.
After being questioned, Chris Nehikhare, the country’s Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, responded, “If there is a government sign board saying so, then it must be so.”
The deputy governor is at odds with the most prominent citizen of the state in the struggle for power.
The governor would prefer a successor from Esanland in the Edo Central senatorial district, while Shaibu, who is from the Edo North senatorial district, has designs on succeeding Obaseki, a native of Benin in the Edo South senatorial district.
According to NAIJASSADOR, Shaibu and his aides staged a walkout of a government-sponsored function after being ejected.
Just 24 hours earlier, on Sunday, an agent with the Department of State Services (DSS) had refused Shaibu entry to meet with Governor Godwin Obaseki.
At the church ceremony commemorating the 32nd anniversary of Edo State’s establishment, Shaibu was among the guests.
