The civil service in Edo state is ecstatic after Governor Godwin Obaseki approved the payment of the 13th month’s salary to the state’s civil and public servants beginning in December 2023.
Obaseki gave his approval during a meeting with state civil and public servants on Monday at the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub in Benin City.
The governor, who claimed to be on a thank-you mission following a successful Edo House of Assembly election, emphasized that the approval of the 13th month salary payment comes with a catch: “I do for you, you do for Edo.”
Obaseki revealed this while interacting with civil and public servants between levels 8 and 17 at the Sir Victor Uwaifo International Airport. Benin City, the state capital of Edo, is home to the Creative Hub.
The governor, who thanked Edo workers for their support over the last six years, promised the development of the Benin Port and other projects aimed at putting the state on a path of long-term economic growth and development.
“You have requested a 13th-month salary to be paid to you in December,” he said. We will do it, but how will you repay the state government between now and December?
“I’m here today to express my gratitude for your support.” I know I have people when I look back. You’ve been there for me for the past six and a half years.
“I want to thank you for voting in the last election.”

“All I’ve done in the last six and a half years has been to put you where you truly belong, because you are the heart and engine of Edo state.”
“Our focus is on how to ensure the sustainability of the reforms we have embarked on,” the governor added, “and you must play an active role in this journey.” We want Edo to be a role model for the country and to give it hope.
“I appreciate your efforts to ensure the state’s development.” You must be trained and retrained in order to participate in the reforms. We should ensure that the next leader of the State will not take us back.”
