Governor Nyesom Wike and the G5 group have been instructed by Wike Senate President Godswill Akpabio to create a new opposition group within the People’s Democratic Party in order to clear the way for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.
In his hometown of Rumueprikom in the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of the oil-rich South-South state, Wike hosted a thanksgiving reception at his private property on Ada-George Road on Sunday. At the event, former Akwa Ibom State governor Akpabio gave a speech.
“We are overjoyed and honored to have G5. Please make sure that another G5 emerges in 2027 so that the APC can continue to do well in this nation, Akpabio pleaded.
The G5, a substantial group of elected officials who opposed their party’s pick for the 2023 presidential race, received congratulations from the Senate President for their contribution to the APC’s recent triumph.
He also thanked the late Alaafin, may his soul rest in peace, and mentioned G5 member and governor of Oyo State Seyi Makinde, stating, “I predicted that you are going to be a governor when I met you. I was just observing your gait and thought, “This man walks like a governor.” I wasn’t shocked when you were elected governor.
The G5 members, including Wike, Makinde, former governors Okezie Ikpeazu, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Samuel Ortom, former governor Ayo Fayose, acting PDP chairman Umar Damagum, and former governors James Ibori, Peter Odili, and Abdullahi Ganduje, were in attendance.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the governor of Lagos State, acted as a representative for President Bola Tinubu.
The G-5, according to some Nigerians, had a significant impact on the recent presidential election, which Bola Tinubu won with a lead of about two million votes over his nearest challenger.
Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, the G-5 had insisted on zoning the president to the South Region, which had a big impact on how the votes were distributed in the election.
