Taraba State is on edge as the governorship election petition tribunal in Jalingo, the state capital, prepares to hand down a ruling.
The tribunal has scheduled a decision on the petition filed by the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and its gubernatorial candidate in the 2023 general election, Professor Sani Yahaya, against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Agbu Kefas for September 30.
According to SAREWA HAUSA reporting, the NNPP and its guber candidate took the PDP and Governor Kefas to court, alleging irregularities in the election.
Yahaya hoped the court would throw out the whole thing and let the state have new elections for governor.
Only two weeks have passed since the parties’ last written addresses to the tribunal presided over by Justice G.A. Sunmonu were adopted.
Those who spoke with our correspondent from the PDP camp expressed legitimate concern about the impending verdict.
Andeta’rang Irammae, the party’s official spokeswoman, has observed, “There is anxiety because of the current trends of dispensing justice in Nigeria.”
There is good cause for concern, yet we remain optimistic and trust that God will provide a way out.
Members of the NNPP have also acknowledged that concern is widespread inside the party.
