Gianluigi Buffon, the great Italian goalie, has announced his retirement.
He posted online, saying:
We’re done here, guys! All I have is what you gave me. I left nothing out for you. Together, we accomplished this.
The 45-year-old had planned to finish out his contract at Parma, which is set to expire in June 2024, and play until the 2026 World Cup.
The goalie had planned to make the announcement last Wednesday, but a series of ailments over the past year caused him to rethink his plans.
