On Thursday, Niger’s former president, Mohamed Bazoum, released a statement after the country’s armed forces admitted to toppling him and seizing control of the country.
We previously reported that the military detained Bazoum on Wednesday and then announced the coup via a television broadcast early on Thursday.
Ten military officers spoke directly to President Bazoum throughout the broadcast, telling him that they had taken over the government in order to put an end to the “deteriorating security situation and bad governance.”
They made an official statement that effectively halted constitutional government, put all government agencies on indefinite hold, and sealed the country’s borders.
On Thursday, Bazoum wrote on Twitter that he would fight to preserve the country’s “hard-won” democratic victories.
The French translation of the Niger president’s tweet reads, “The hard-won gains will be maintained. All of Nigeria’s democrats will make sure of it.
Hassoumi Mashesoudou, the country’s foreign minister, also issued a call to arms on X (previously Twitter) for “all democrats and patriots” to ensure the coup failed.
Foreign Minister Hassoumi Massoudou spoke with FRENCH 24 and reported that President Bazoum is in good health and that the elected government is the legitimate authority in Niger.
