The underground armoured cable that supplies the Murtala Muhammad International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos was targeted by suspected thieves on Friday.
Nigeria Airforce guards on duty spotted the suspects near the airport’s perimeter fence as they dug the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN)’s underground cable.
However, upon seeing the NAF guards, they allegedly ran away, with one of them being shot in the arms before being apprehended.
This comes following a theft of airfield lighting wires along the runway of the MMIA’s international wing two weeks ago.
According to the Daily Trust, the airport has recently seen security breaches due to unauthorized individuals entering the airport through the perimeter fence regions. As a result, officials have implemented a number of new security measures.
According to Abdullahi Yakubu-Funtua, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, they saw the guards and ran away.
However, he said that a guard shot at them and wounded a man named Usman Musa.
After being shot, 28-year-old Ijora resident and Adamawa State native Musa was rushed to 661NAF Hospital Ikeja for treatment.
The suspect is being treated at General Hospital, Oyingbo, according to the FAAN spokeswoman, while his co-conspirators managed to get away.
He promised that once Usman Musa had stabilized, investigators would question him thoroughly. An investigation into the theft of Runway Lighting from Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, may benefit from this event, according to the Authority.
