On Wednesday, Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo’s election as the representative for Akwa Ibom State’s Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency was overturned by the Abuja Court of Appeal.
According to SAREWAHASUA Ukpong-Udo of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) was proclaimed the victor of the February 25 polls by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following a supplementary election in the seat.
But Glory Edet, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, contested his triumph.
The YPP candidate was later removed from office and a rerun was ordered by the Akwa Ibom State National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal.
Since Ukpong-Udo was dissatisfied with the tribunal’s decision, she sought to have it overturned by the Appeal Court.
On Wednesday, however, a panel of the Court of Appeal presided over by Justice Abba Mohammed affirmed the tribunal’s decision and mandated a rerun.
Nevertheless, it is not absolutely clear if the rerun was mandated throughout the full federal constituency or only in the voting units where the results were deemed inconclusive by INEC.
