Mayor Victor Ikeji, Chairman of Abia State’s Umuahia North Local Government Area, has questioned the delay in treating patients whose ailments require immediate attention.
He stated the patients included those who had been in an accident or had been shot.
Ikeji said this during a meeting in his office with proprietors of private medical institutions in Umuahia North council. He admonished medical practitioners to uphold their professional oath of saving lives, stressing that lives should take precedence over money.
The local government chairman expressed disappointment that some patients were not seen due to a lack of an initial payment deposit.
He emphasized that many of these individuals could have survived if they had received immediate attention prior to the demand for payment.
He encouraged medical professionals to regard saving lives as the main goal.
Ikeji, who also expressed concern that some gunshot patients were not receiving treatment because they did not provide a Police Report, stated that not everyone with a gunshot wound is a criminal.
He recommended them to attend to a patient in an emergency scenario first, and then request a Police Report from that individual.
