Officers are arrested after a stray bullet kills a 17-year-old boy in Jos.

Plateau State Police have arrested five officers from the C Division for the shooting and killing of a 17-year-old boy named Ibuchim Ofezie in Jos.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the state police spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, stated that the officers involved would be sanctioned following an investigation.

“It was gathered that the officers visited the terminus market and chased those illegally operating in an attempt to enforce the state’s ban on the operation of commercial motorcycles.” They shot sporadically during the process, and a stray bullet struck Ofezie inside his market shop.

“The killing was condemned by Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Bartholomew Onyeka.”

Ibuchim Ofezie, a 17-year-old resident of Agingi Community in Bassa Local Government Area of Jos, was killed by some obstinate police patrol operatives assigned to the Command’s “C” Division.

“The CP, who described the incident as a paradox, maintained that the police are authorized by law to carry firearms in order to protect citizens’ lives, not to take their lives.”

“The commissioner has ordered the officers’ arrest to ensure that the wrongdoing patrol team does not evade justice.”

The five officers were arrested and are being investigated by the state’s Homicide Section of the Criminal Investigation Department, SCID.
