Workers in Taraba and Gombe States Call for a North East Nigerian Minimum Wage of N60,000 Ajaero Requests Market Survey in His Role as NLC President

Workers in the states of Taraba and Gombe have recently proposed a new national minimum wage of N60,000.

Before settling on a new national minimum wage, Joe Ajaero, president of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has argued that a thorough market survey should be conducted.

Workers in the states of Taraba and Gombe have recently proposed a new national minimum wage of N60,000.

But employees in the states of Bauchi and Adamawa have asked for a 50% raise, to N30,000, from the present salary.

Residents of the states of Borno and Yobe have decided to implement the national minimum wage as proposed by the president’s tripartite committee.

During Thursday’s Yola public hearing on the proposed national minimum wage, Ajaero—the chair of the North-East public hearing—called the existing wage “a starvation wage.”

It would be pointless, in his view, to try to reach a new wage agreement before “hearing from the market.”

Speaking on behalf of the deputy governor, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri said that, considering the present economic crisis in the country, no amount would be sufficient for the Nigerian worker.

Bala Mohammed, governor of Bauchi State, also spoke at the public hearing and said that the present sharing formula should be reviewed because the “majority of the Nigerian people live in the states.”

I am deeply concerned about the situation in the country, as Governor Mohammed pointed out.

“Mr. President, Nigerians are watching us while they suffer,” he stated.

Additionally, a number of organizations representing the labor movement, unions, and religious communities put forth suggestions.
