Protests Break Out in Lagos as Nigerian Power Employees Protest Accusations of Corruption at Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) Office

Based on what SarewaHausa has learned, the workers reportedly invaded the Marina office about 5 in the morning on Thursday.

In response to what they claim is an effort to conceal corruption within the corporation, members of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) have picketed the Eko Electricity Distribution corporation (EKEDC) headquarters in Marina, Lagos.

Based on what SarewaHausa have learned, the workers reportedly invaded the Marina office about 5 in the morning on Thursday.

The union claimed that the company’s management and board members were involved in corrupt practices that would lead to the downfall of the business.

The electrical distribution company’s light was allegedly threatened by a dark web of corruption in January, according to SarewaHausa.

Customers frequently complained about the company’s inefficiencies and problems, and the analysis showed that Eko DISCO, as it is also known, has been dealing with shortcomings and subpar service supply for a while.

According to the findings of the study, high-level executives were complicit in a system of widespread corruption that contributed to the company’s problems.

Employees implicated in the violations allegedly helped out “ghost workers” within the firm and made millions of Naira off of shady transactions.

No one knows for sure how much money the management team embezzled from the business, according to anonymous sources who spoke to SarewaHausa. Nevertheless, it was said that the amount would range from N150 million to N300 million, with a significant portion of it associated with Wola Joseph, the Chief Legal Officer (CLO) of the EKEDP.

Some time ago, Wola was associated with a family friend’s job who produced a forged certificate, according to sources who spoke with SarewaHausa. According to sources, she was the chief human resources officer at the time, and the board of directors knew about it, but they chose to ignore it. One of the company’s board members is Dere Otubu, who also happens to be its chairman.

Despite accusations from employees and proof connecting Wola to certain crimes, certain board members allegedly shielded her and prevented any corruption inquiry from reaching her.

The accused cover-up involved a high-ranking official of Nigeria’s Eko Electric Company (Ekedp), according to SarewaHausa.com (2024/01/14).

Speaking with SarewaHausa on Thursday, one of the demonstrators said that the corporation cleared Chief Legal Officer (CLO) Mrs. Wola of all charges related to the corruption scandal.

“According to what I’ve heard, the board members have decided to clear the Chief Legal Officer, Mrs. Wola, of all charges related to the corruption scandal,” he stated.

The board members were given an ultimatum to produce a report on the subject by the end of the meeting, but they still haven’t done so, leading to the union’s move.

“Eko Electricity Distribution company’s cash collection has been steadily declining, which has led to an unprecedented situation where the management could only pay the allowances of the Principal Manager and above as salaries at the end of February.”

Eventually, the establishment would be ruined due to the corruption of the present administration and their collaboration with the company’s board members, he stated.
