PDP loses Ogun gubernatorial election battle in Supreme Court

The Supreme Court dismissed the appeal filed by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its governorship candidate, Oladipupo Adebutu, on Friday, bringing the legal struggle over the Ogun State governorship election to an end.

The PDP and Oladipupo’s united appeal to the Supreme Court was dismissed for lack of merit.

Justice Tijani Abubakar dismissed the petition in the main decision he issued.

Justice Abubakar dismissed Adebutu and the PDP’s request for an order compelling the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to hold new elections in the 99 polling units where polls were purportedly cancelled.

The court rejected the charges of election cancelation in the 99 voting stations.

On the contrary, the Supreme Court ruled that the All Progressives Congress, or APC, and its governorship candidate, Dapo Abiodun, were constitutionally declared winners of the March 18 election by the electoral commission.

Justice Abubakar concurred that the appellants’ documents claiming that elections were cancelled in 99 polling units were useless and lacking in evidential value because they lacked a heading, a date, and the signature and name of any official.

The court affirmed the findings and conclusions of the Ogun State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal and the Court of Appeal, which had previously dismissed the petition for lack of merit.
