No free ticket for you – APC tells Aiyedatiwa Ondo governor

The All Progressives Congress, or APC, has informed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State that he will not receive an automatic ticket.

The APC made the announcement ahead of the state’s governorship election on November 16, 2024.

Felix Morka, APC national spokesman, announced this on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme on Thursday.

According to him, the APC is democratic, and anyone seeking a nomination must earn it.

When asked if the APC would award Aiyedatiwa the right of first refusal ahead of the party’s primary for the November election, Morka responded, “We have not had that discussion, but we are a democratic party; we are a progress party; we don’t gift things to anyone; people have to justify and earn it.

“And it is not up to us to justify their suitability, qualification, or criteria; it is up to the people of the state, who are our members and will vote in the direct or indirect primary.

“Whatever preference somebody has, it is subject to the democratic decision of the party members who will compete in our primaries.

“We don’t give free gifts in APC; we contest and we compete and we win whatever it is we can get in terms of representation,” he went on to say.

Morka further stated that he cannot predict whether the governorship ticket will be zoned in Ondo or not.

“We have yet to engage on zoning. “We will inform the public if and when we do this,” he said.

On December 27, 2023, Aiyedatiwa, formerly Ondo deputy governor, was sworn in as the substantive governor of the South-West state following the death of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has already scheduled the Ondo State Governorship Election for November 16, 2024, barring any last-minute amendments.
