Awoyeye Jeremiah’s victory in the election for Ife Central State Constituency as a candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been overturned.
On Saturday, the National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Osogbo declared the election to be invalid.
A rerun election was also ordered for 26 polling units in the Ife-central State constituency, as stated in the majority verdict read by Justice V. O. Eboreime, who presided over the three-person panel consisting of Justices Habibu Mika’ilu and Clara Kataps.
It was also decided by the tribunal that INEC had made a mistake in pronouncing Awoyeye Jeremiah the victor.
That “INEC did not conduct the election in compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022 as amended, Regulations and Guidelines for the Conduct of Elections, and the Manual for Election,” it ruled.
After the March 18 election, Ife Central State Constituency All Progressives Congress, APC, candidate Adejobi Johnson took the Respondents to an election tribunal.
Adejobi further requested that the court invalidate the INEC declaration and return.
Lawyers for INEC,.Awoyeye, and the PDP have already declared their intention to appeal the ruling.
