George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, has stated that celebrations commemorating the 2023 anniversary of Independence Day will be low key, although he has not provided an explanation for this.
On Wednesday, after meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima, Akume made the announcement to reporters outside the State House in Abuja.
“Independence Day is a monumental occasion for any nation, and Nigeria is no different. We have everything we need for this year’s party, but we’ll be keeping things low key for obvious reasons.
He told the press, “This year’s celebration is going to be low-key; there will be no room for a fantastic jamboree at the Eagle Square and other locations.”
In his speech, Akume urged Nigerians to take this year’s independence celebration as an opportunity to ponder the country’s unity and the road ahead.
We, the people, must pause to consider our collective future and the path our country is taking under the able guidance of President Bola Tinubu. We hope the best for the Nigerian people and want to reassure them that brighter times are ahead—and soon.
In response to organized labor’s planned walkout, the government secretary expressed confidence that the underlying concerns could be resolved amicably.
He urged labor unions to wait patiently while the administration addressed their concerns.
“The Labour leaders are very patriotic Nigerians, and we want to believe correctly that nobody would want to have a strike at this time in our history because it is not in the interest of the workers and it is not in the interest of anybody.”
It may take time, but our administration is committed to improving the lives of Nigerian workers and bringing prosperity to all of the country. Akume said that it was premature to pass judgment on the government after only a few months in power.
