Tinubu tells world leaders at the UNGA to impose sanctions on illegal mineral and arms smugglers in Africa

At the UNGA, Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu called for sanctions against those responsible for trafficking illegal armaments and minerals out of Africa.

Tinubu announced this during his presentation to world leaders at the 78th United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday in New York, USA, according to Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity.

President Tinubu blamed non-African organizations for the continent’s poverty and instability.

He said that the resources that could have been used to advance Africa are instead being taken by these foreign companies.

Thousands of our people have been conscripted into unlawful labor by foreign corporations aided by local criminals who aspire to be petty warlords in order to mine gold and other minerals.

“Billions of cash that were supposed to help the country are instead funding a wide variety of dangerous businesses. If nothing is done to stop them, they pose a serious threat to national security. Many Africans wonder if this phenomena is accidental or deliberate given the magnitude of the wrongdoing and the stakes at play.

A response from member nations is needed to prevent “21st-century pillage of the continent’s riches,” he said. “Member nations must respond by working with us to deter their firms and nationals,” he added.

Tinubu emphasized that Nigeria and the rest of Africa welcome foreign direct investment in their economies.

The issue is not whether or not to do business in Nigeria. The question is whether or not the rest of the world is ready to engage in fair and mutually beneficial trade with Nigeria and Africa,” he continued.

According to SAREWA HAUSA reporting, Tinubu left Nigeria to attend the 78th UNGA in New York.
