Dauda Lawal, candidate for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has been confirmed as governor of Zamfara State by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
The tribunal found no substance in the challenge to Lawal’s victory filed by Bello Matawalle, the gubernatorial candidate for the All Progressives Congress, APC.
As a result, it granted Matawalle, the petitioner, a N500,000 cost.
Justice Cordelia Ogadi, Justice Bello Hassan, and Justice Aliyu Gegele, all three members of the panel, reached a unanimous decision.
Justice Cordelia Ogadi, who presided over the three-person panel, read the lengthy verdict after deliberating for more than four hours.
The tribunal found that the petitioner could not provide sufficient evidence to support his claims that election results were improperly collated and that voting did not take place in several wards across the State.
The tribunal decided that Matawalle lacked sufficient evidence to establish his claims that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not complied with the Electoral Act and had conducted the election in a fraudulent manner.
