Tinubu would send Shettima to the G77 summit in Cuba on his behalf

To attend the G77, China Leaders Summit in Havana, Cuba, from September 15–17 on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima left Nigeria on Wednesday.

According to a statement released by the Vice President’s Office Director of Information, Mr. Olusola Abiola, Shettima will attend the summit among other world leaders such as UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres.

He explained that members, primarily from the global south, would be discussing development challenges at the summit.

Summit participants will also discuss how to use science, technology, and innovation to boost economic and social development in member states.

“Also, Shettima will, on the sidelines of the Summit, hold bilateral meetings with other world leaders to promote Nigeria’s trade and investment relations in line with the economic development diplomacy of the President Bola Tinubu administration,” he added.

President Miguel Daz-Canel of the Republic of Cuba, in his role as G77 Chairman, will host the summit in Havana, as announced by Abiola.

This year’s conference will focus on “Current Development Challenges: The Role of Science, Technology, and Innovation.”

He remembered that Nigeria had been one of the 77 poor countries that formed the G77 in 1964.

He elaborated, saying that the group’s goal was to “promote the collective economic interests of its members and create an enhanced joint negotiating capacity in the United Nations.” The group is made up of 134 developing countries representing 80% of the world’s population.

According to him, Shettima will be accompanied by Minister Abubakar Kyari of Agriculture and Rural Development, Minister Uche Nnaji of Innovation, Science, and Technology, and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr Adamu Lamuwa.(NAN)
