In the Yobe State communities of Gulani and Geidam, UNICEF is providing free healthcare to 7,000 children who have never received any medication.
YSCHMA, the Yobe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency, is a partner on this initiative.
This was discussed at a one-day conference of stakeholders and was announced by Dr. Muhammad Lawan Gana, Commissioner of Health and Human Services for the State of Yobe.
His definition of a “zero-dose child” is one who is between the ages of 12 and 23 months old and has not yet received their first dose of the DPT-1 vaccination, which protects against diphtheria, tetanus, BCG, polio, meningococcal, and pertussis.
For example, he said, “Through the partnership with UNICEF, 3,500 children from each area will be covered with a pre-payment plan to access primary and secondary healthcare services in all YSCHMA-accredited and engaged health facilities across the selected local government areas.”
