The state administration of Abia rescued pregnant girls and young mothers from an unlawful care and charity home, provided them with rehabilitation services, and reconnected them with their families in an effort to eradicate the crime of infant trafficking and illicit adoptions.
Umumkpeyi, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area (LGA), is home to the Nma Charity and Social Mothers Rehabilitation Centre.
In June, the government of Abia State rescued about 20’social mothers’ from the Nma charity and social mothers rehabilitation centre in Umumkpeyi, Isiala Ngwa North LGA, an illegal care home. Once there, they were given medical care, counseling, and education about the dangers of phony caregivers.
Mrs Pricilla Otti, the wife of the governor of Abia State, visited the young women the day after they were rescued; she promised to rehabilitate, reform, and reintegrate the abused women into society. Some of the women were reportedly pregnant at the time of their rescue.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Ngozi Blessing Felix of Abia State made the announcement this week that her office had provided counseling and rehabilitative services to the social mothers as part of the reunification event.
The state government saw it as vital to reunite the young mothers who had been in their custody and care with their families, as highlighted by the Commissioner, who was represented by a director in the ministry, Mrs Onwuka Nnennaya.
She urged the communities and families who would take in the rehabilitated individuals to treat them as their own, to love and adore them without judgment or stigma.
Blessing Otuonye, of Umuakaba Ogbodiukwu Umuopara in Umuahia South LGA, who gave birth to twins who later died, responded on behalf of the community by thanking Abia State Governor Alex Otti, the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, and the management of Madonna College of Health for their kindness and promising to start anew with their families.
