Patrick Doyle, a veteran of the Nigerian film industry, has publicly dismissed Burna Boy’s success as a musician and Grammy winner.
A few days ago, the musician who calls himself the “African Giant” remarked that many people in his home country did not recognize his greatness.
However, Patrick Doyle wrote on Facebook that Burna Boy and his peers should give credit where it’s due and acknowledge the contributions of the great musicians who came before them.
The actor claimed that Burna and other Nigerian musicians owe their success to the work of their predecessors, thus the actor concluded that Burna has not accomplished anything particularly noteworthy on his own.
Doyle also said that contemporary Nigerian musicians owe it to pioneers like SunnyAde, Fela Anikulapo, Majek Fashek, Ik—Dairo, and many more, who worked tirelessly from the 1960s to the 2000s.
He stated, “The credit for the exploits that appear to be inflating the likes of Burna Boy up ought to be appropriately attributed to the greats who cleared the thorny routes that have made avenues for his likes to stroll through very effortlessly.
“Burna Boy has not accomplished anything noteworthy on his own. He and his contemporaries benefit from the efforts of former heroes.
They should be grateful to the people who came before them and worked hard. From the ’60s through the ’00s, there was a galaxy of great musicians that blazed the path, including SunnyAde, Fela Anikulapo, Majek Fashek, I, k. Dairo, and countless others.
Great people and great achievements don’t happen by themselves. Let us not help bring into being such an egotistical and annoying monster.
