Agege LG in Lagos, Nigeria, has lowered the number of workdays for their employees to three

Agege Local Government Area (LGA) in Lagos State has declared a reduction of its working days to three in an effort to alleviate the economic hardship being faced by workers.

In a statement released on Tuesday in Agege, the council chairman, Ganiyu Egunjobi, explained that the cuts were necessary because of the impact the federal government’s subsidy withdrawal will have on locals.

The current economic difficulties caused by the government’s elimination of oil subsidies has also affected our personnel.

Welcomingly, the subsidy regime has been dismantled because it served solely to enrich a select few at the expense of vital economic sectors and the general populace.

The council’s leadership is aware of the negative effects its decisions have had on city employees and residents.

“At this time of great difficulty, the council under my leadership is resolved to provide some comfort to employees, residents, and business owners.”

On the other hand, Egunjobi departed from the norm by declaring, “Various forms of levies paid to the council by residents and business operators are hereby lowered.”

However, the council chairman stated that workers’ assigned work weeks had been cut from four to three in order to save money on transportation costs.

He claims it will help employees save money on gas and transit costs as they travel to and from work.

He added that the only people exempt from the new policy were those who worked in the departments of health and environment and were therefore required to be at work on normal business days.

In the meanwhile, the council head has ordered that the four free school shuttle buses meant to carry the public school children begin transporting the workers for free.

“Since our students are on break and their four buses are unnecessary, we are putting it in the service of our staff to supplement their own staff bus in commuting them to work and their homes,” Egunjobi explained.
