Court sacks Kano NNPP Rep Yerima

Muktar Umar Yerima of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) had his election overturned by the National and State House of Assembly Elections Petition Tribunal in Kano.

The panel also ordered INEC, the country’s electoral board, to revoke Yerima’s certificate of return.

Hafizu Kawu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) filed the petition that contested Yerima’s election on the grounds that he lacked the necessary qualifications.

The Tarauni Federal Constituency election for the House of Representatives was won by Yerima, as reported by DAILY POST.

According to Daily Trust, a three-person tribunal panel led by Justice I.P. Chima found that Yerima lacked qualification since he had faked his primary school certificate.

Since 2009, Yerima has used three (Umar Mukhtar Zakari) identities on international passports, but his elementary school certificate still reads Umar Mukhtar, therefore the tribunal ruled that his claim of a name change in 2022 was not valid.

It also stated that the certificate presented by the expelled lawmaker was not recognized by Hausawa Primary School.

As a result, it was decided that the NNPP did not field a candidate.
