The ECOWAS standby force has been tasked with reestablishing constitutional order in the Republic of Niger.
Following Thursday’s ECOWAS Extraordinary Meeting resolution on the coup in Niger, the order was issued.
President Omar Alieu Touray of ECOWAS made the announcement on Thursday in Abuja while reading the decision of the regional body.
All attempts at discussion with the military junta have been ignored, ECOWAS stated, and the group condemned the continued arrest of former President Mohamed Bazoum and his family.
The regional organization also requested backing for its decision from the African Union (AU), as well as from partner countries and institutions.
Articles of the resolution include the following: “Direct the committee of the Chief of Defense Staff to immediately activate the ECOWAS standby force with all its elements.”
To restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger, please order the deployment of the ECOWAS standby force.
Reiterate its resolve to use only nonviolent tactics to bring back constitutional order
