To Whom Does Burkina Faso Owe Its Latest Coup, and Who Is Ibrahim Traore, His Soldier

The name Ibrahim Traore has been all over the news for a few days. Many people are probably curious about who this young man is.
Here’s Your Answer to ‘Who Is Ibrahim Traore?’

The current leader of Burkina Faso is Ibrahim Traore. He became the world’s youngest head of state in January 1988, when he was just 21 years old.

He earned his degree from the University of Ougadougou with Highest Honors.

He enlisted in the Burkina Faso military in 2009 and advanced through the ranks fast. For anti-aircraft training, he was dispatched to Morocco. After returning to Kaya, he was given command of an army unit.

He fought in the conflict in Mali and assisted in putting down the terrorist insurrection in Burkina Faso.

Traoré was one of the army leaders that helped put the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration military junta into power in Burkina Faso in January 2022. This happened after many young soldiers in the army started to lose faith in the government and Paul-henri Sandaogo Damiba’s leadership.

Ibrahim Traore became the new head of state and military after the coup.

France had been helping Traore in its fight against a Jihadist insurgency, but the Traorean administration dismissed them in 2023.

If the three parties can reach an agreement, Traore’s proposed union of Mali and Quinea would create the largest area under the leadership of a military junta in the world.

Traore voiced his displeasure with Africa’s continued poverty despite the region having more than enough natural resources to become a global superpower during their recent visit to Russia, when they met with Vladimir Putin.
