There Must Be Constructive Dialogue Between the FG and the IGP, Egbetokun Says

The acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is very worried about the statewide protests called for by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Egbetokun on Tuesday reminded protesters that they have a fundamental right to hold peaceful rallies and warned against the hijacking of the events by violent extremists.

In response to the labor unions’ complaints, the IGP has called for more open communication between the FG and the unions in order to find solutions.

He wanted the top cops from each division and the AIGs above them to talk to the heads of the NLC and TUC to figure out how to terminate the protests peacefully.

Through the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, he issued a statement reiterating the NPF’s dedication to citizen security throughout the demonstrations.

The NPF reaffirmed that it will not stand for any disruption to public safety caused by vandalism, gangsterism, or extortion.

The Nigeria Police Force is ready to use all available resources to preserve peace and order and protect the lives and property of our citizens in view of the probable obstacles posed by the scheduled protests. As a result, the IGP has issued a call for heightened vigilance and professionalism from all law enforcement personnel.

The Police Commissioner “urges all stakeholders, including the NLC, TUC, and other civil society groups, to embrace peaceful dialogue as the most effective means of resolving grievances,” according to the statement.

“The Police is committed to ensuring a secure and conducive environment for open dialogue, constructive engagement, and mutual understanding for the seamless exercise of civil rights,” the Commissioner added.
