Tinubu Demands CBN Investigation, Appoints Independent Expert

In order to investigate the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other important GBEs, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed a Special Investigator.

In a letter dated July 28, 2023, the President of Nigeria informed Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN) CEO Jim Osayande Obazee that he was assigning Obazee to serve as a special investigator in the ongoing fight against corruption.

The letter, signed by the President, stated that Obazee would be expected to take urgent action to prevent further leakages from the CBN, maintain probity, and improve important government business enterprises, and that the complete terms of his engagement will be communicated at a later date.

The letter states that the special investigator is to report directly to the president and is tasked with compiling a detailed report on the amount of public funds that are in the hands of “corrupt individuals and establishments.”

The letter states, “This administration is, today, continuing the fight against corruption by appointing you as a Special Investigator, to investigate the CBN and Related Entities, in accordance with the fundamental objective set forth in Section 15(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

You are to report directly to my office and your appointment is effective immediately.

In the meantime, here’s what you need to know: “The full terms of your engagement as Special Investigator shall be communicated to you in due course, but require that you immediately take steps to ensure the strengthening and probity of key Government Business Entities (GBEs), further block leakages in CBN and related GBEs, and provide a comprehensive report on public wealth currently in the hands of corrupt individuals and establishments (whether private or public).

Working with relevant security and anti-corruption authorities, your mission is to probe the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and any associated organizations.

I need to be updated once a week on the status of the project.

A copy of the president’s order suspending Godwin Emefiele as CBN governor on June 9, 2023 was also included in the package.
