Ondo State Police Command officers have apprehended the driver who they say ran over and killed a police officer on Sunday in the Ifon neighborhood of Ose Local Government Area, along the Benin-Owo Expressway.
The unnamed driver reportedly struck an Assistant Superintendent of Police, according to the police.
Nigerian soldiers in Edo State tracked thed down to Sobe and made the arrest.
An previous claim that the officer was killed by expressway kidnappers was also refuted by the leadership.
Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the state’s police public relations officer, verified the officer’s death and said the incident was the result of a hit-and-run rather than a kidnapping.
She explained that the police had attempted to halt a suspicious vehicle but that the driver had refused to pull over. So, the highway patrol was notified, but before they could reach the designated area near ifon, the motorist veered, striking an ASP, who tragically died at the scene.
“The driver, was, however, pursued, and, fortunately for us, he (driver) was arrested by the military men at Sobe in Edo State.”
