There has been growing outrage and condemnation since a fight broke out on Tuesday between officials from the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) and operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) at the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, over the custody of suspended Governor of (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.
Chaos broke out as DSS agents tried to apprehend controversial central bank governor Emefiele after Justice Nicholas Oweibo of the Federal High Court in Lagos granted him bail in the amount of N20 million. Constitutional attorneys have harshly criticised the DSS’s actions and urged for the suspension and imprisonment of the agency’s Director-General, Yusuf Bichi, in response to the agency’s unprofessional behaviour. They voiced their shock at the DSS’s persistent disregard for the rule of law and called on the government to take immediate action to stop this misuse of authority.
Lawyers for Emefiele said that the DSS had previously disobeyed court judgements prohibiting their arrest and ignoring court orders for his release. They went on to say that the agency’s conduct showed a disregard for the rule of law and prompted severe worries about the agency’s regard for democracy.
Lawyers defending the country’s constitution have demanded that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu act swiftly to have the DSS director arrested for his agency’s activities. They emphasized how important it is to protect the credibility of the judicial system and maintain democratic norms in the face of such conduct.
In general, the conflict has prompted outrage and demands for accountability, drawing attention to the need to deal with problems related to the conduct of the DSS and the respect for the rule of law in Nigeria.
